Ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm and the rights to the Star Wars franchise there has been rumors
and speculation about not only another three Star War movies but possible spinoffs as well. As the new
Star War glides towards it potential release date of 2015, there is a very good chance that we could start
to see those spinoffs come to life.
There are few film franchises with the popularity of Star Wars which means Disney is virtually
guaranteed a huge windfall from the franchise. Rumors are floating around right now have at least
one film being put out every year from spinoffs to the new trilogy that will likely focus on the next
generation of Skywalkers. We can expect new characters being introduced and new actors taking over
prominent roles within the franchise which could lead to a bevy of new movies focusing on the origins of
each main character like Han Solo and Boba Fett and perhaps one about Yoda as well.
Much of the focus has been on the next trilogy but Disney will have the chance to truly expand on the
Star Wars franchise and take it to a level George Lucas never intended or dreamed. The spinoffs on Fett,
Yoda and Solo would also expand the franchise overall and will keep fans entertained and interested in
between releases of the trilogy movies.
No matter what Disney ultimately decides to do with their new franchise one thing is certain, we are
about to see a drastic influx of Star Wars into our lives from video games to movies to everything
imaginable in between.
If Disney is not careful they risk angering scores of dedicated fans. They will need to walk the fine line
between staying true to the story and original characters while also exploring new avenues. This is
always tricky because new visions aren’t always popular and Disney does run the risk of Star Wars
overload on the general public. They have to remember that the diehard fans will be there and as long
as Disney sticks to the storyline will continue to be there. They will need to attract new fans and keep
them entertained and interested. While a new movie every year should do that they also risk going too
far off on tangents and anger new and old fans alike.
Disney has a real opportunity to take the Star Wars franchise to new levels and it will be up to them to
deliver. They will have to be careful, however, since it would be easy to get too far off track and anger
the dedicated fans that have supported Star Wars through five different decades. Disney can either
take the Star Wars franchise to new heights or ruin one of the most popular franchises to ever grace the
silver screen.
