I Talk Red Tails, Star Trek 2, The Expendables 2, and More on the Latest Episode of Geek Nation.
The severe snow and ice in Seattle could not keep the team away and we talk about “Red Tails”, “Underworld: Awakening”, “Star Trek 2″, “The Expendables 2″, and more on this weeks episode.
Red Tails
” Star Wars” creator Geogre Lucas has spent over 23 years attempting to bring one of his passion projects to the screen and at long last, it has arrived.
‘Red Tails’ is the story of the Tuskegee Airmen and the legendary 332nd fighter group. The African American Army Air Corps squadron who became one of the most highly decorated and distinguished air squadrons of World War 2.The film stars Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr (who also stared in the 1995 film THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN), Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Aml Ameen, Cliff Smith (aka Method Man), and Bryan Cranston (Malcom In The Middle and Breaking Bad).
‘Red Tails’ starts in 1944. World War 2 has raged in Europe for more than 5 years and despite major advances into Europe by the Allies, the war takes it’s toll on American Forces. Considered to be an unorthadox approach at the time and facing cristicism from President Franklin Roosevelt and various elected officials, American generals consider using African American pilots from the Tuskegee Experimental training program. Facing bigotry, doubt, and the possiblity of being shut down and shipped back to the U.S … fate steps in and the pilots are given a chance to prove themselves and show their courage in combat. Leading the way in the landing of American troops in Italy and then serving as bomber escorts in the skies over Germany the ‘Red Tails’ became a pivotal force in Allied bombing raids and combating the German Luftwaffe.
The movie was directed by Anthony Hemingway (credits include Battlestar Galactic, The Wire, and CSI: New York) with George Lucas serving as executive producer.
I went into the theater thinking that this would be a 90 minute to 2 hour war film. Instead, I found a film that blended an good action movie with elements of history, great actors, and a solid script. I didn’t take my eyes off the screen for a minute and the action was great all around. I was just a little disappointed in the computer generated special effects. Considering George Lucas was involved in the movie, I expected more live-action scenes relating to the air-to-air combat visuals. But still, it was a great film.
I’d certainly give it 4 out of 5 and checkout the film for yourself.

Beauty and The Beast 3D
The award winning classic “Beauty and The Beast” returns to theaters in 3D and continues to enchant.
Once upon a time there was a prince who lived in a marvelous castle. One night an old homeless woman knocked on the door offering the prince a rose in exchange for a place to stay. After turning the woman away because of her looks, she turns into a beautiful enchantress and decides to punish the prince by transforming him into an ugly beast. She then gives him the enchanted rose and a magic mirror and says that the rose will bloom until he turns twenty one but after that he has to find love before the last petal of the rose falls or he will stay like that forever.
Belle is the most beautiful girl in town and loves to read. She is an avid reader but the whole town thinks that she is weird because according to them it is not right for a woman to read as much as Belle reads. Gaston, a hunter has his eye on Belle and tries to get her to marry him. Gaston and the whole village always speak awful things about Belle’s father Maurice the inventor. Her father has created an invention that hopefully will make them money to be able to move away from the small town they currently live in. On his way to the fair he gets lost and is almost attacked by wolves. While being chased Maurice finds safety behind the gates of a dark and gloomy castle.
Inside the castle Maurice is greeted by a talking clock and candelabra. When the enchantress turned the prince into a beast she also turned all who lived in the castle into objects as well. The beast finds out and emerges from the shadows throws him into captivity in a tower of the castle.
While Belle is feeding the chickens she discovers the horse that was supposed to take her father to the fair. Finding it strange she hops on and has him take her to the castle. Belle enters the castle and discovers Maurice locked in a tower. The beast soon finds out and in order for her father to be saved, she strives to let her take her fathers place and stay in the castle forever. The beast finally agrees and releases Maurice.
He tries to find help by telling customers at a local tavern about the beast, of coarse they all think that he is crazy already and decide to dismiss him. Gaston gets wind of this and formulates an idea that as he believes could possibly win Belle’s heart. Two questions remain if you haven’t seen this movie yet, does Belle ever become free? Does the Beast find true love?
I was super excited to find out that Beauty and the Beast was on the list of re-released Disney movies in 3D. Although this movie is my absolute favorite Disney movie it did not contribute to my opinion on how it is viewed in 3D. The 3D factor in Beauty and the Beast was outstanding to me and in my opinion is worth going to see it. In this case, the 3D makes it feel like you are a part of the story and for me I noticed things that I haven’t noticed before, even after seeing it for the millionth time since I was four years old.

Tribes: Ascend Interview
Recently I spoke with Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios Chief Operating Officer about the latest in the Tribes series, Tribes Ascend. We also have Beta Keys available for the game so if you are interested, please contact as to get yours while they last.
As an F.Y.I. I was at Sierra for Tribes 2 and was Lead QA and Tech for the game so I have a good background with the series. I am so glad you picked it up.
We’re glad as well. Those Tribes games were well ahead of their time – first game with pilotable vehicles, first game with very large maps incorporating indoor and outdoor environments, first game to introduce team-oriented shooter gameplay, and of course skiing and jetpacks! Today’s military shooters are fun but more slow-paced and cover-based. We’re excited to re-introduce the Tribes fast-paced and skill-based combat.
What is the background and setting for the game?
The Tribes franchise is set in the far future and Ascend picks up late in the 34th century. Humanity has discovered artificial wormholes called jumpgates and used these to travel and spread among the stars, settling in an area called The Wilderzone, far from Earth. War divided humanity into many small tribes, but eventually four major tribes emerge as dominant. Tribes Ascend focuses on a new conflict between two of the major Tribes – the Blood Eagle and the Diamond Sword. Other Tribes will make an appearance through cosmetic skins.
What was the process of picking up the series and how did it come about?
Our studio has always been a fan of the series and Tribes was one of the big influences behind our first game Global Agenda. We like jetpacks. We like action shooters. We like team-based multiplayer. Tribes has all three! So in the fall of 2011 we looked into acquiring the series. The Tribes series belonged to InstantAction and they were working on a web-based version of Tribes in order to advance their browser platform. We were able to work out a deal and purchase the IP outright in order to make Ascend as well as future titles related to the Tribes IP.
Any concerns since the last two games in the series did not meet expectations yet the original is such a beloved title.
No. We’ve found that there is still an active and vocal community around each of the previous games. And each of those titles had some strong elements. Our challenge has been to preserve the spirit and feel of Tribes but also evolve it forward with some new concepts. Our Beta community is providing solid feedback and we’ve been patching and updating every single week. We think that is best approach for a great game upon release.
Will the game have a solo/story mode or is it online only?
No solo story mode. We see Tribes as the original online Internet sport. And we want to release Tribes: Ascend in that spirit – with a focus on online multiplayer. We will have tutorial, map-roaming, and practice mode with very simple bot targets but any of that solo content is just training toward multiplayer.
What are some of the new weapons and locales I the game?
Most of the familiar Tribes weapons return – including multiple varieties of the popular disc-launching Spinfusor, the Chaingun, and the Mortar Launcher. But we introduce a great number of new weapons as well such as the Arx Buster that shoots timed mines and personal deployables like turrets and forcefields.
In terms of locales, all the maps are set within the conflict of Blood Eagle and Diamond Sword and include arctic, desert, tropical, and urban. Most importantly for Tribes, they all have terrain that is good for skiing.
Will the game support customizations and mods upon release if not, is this support planned?
Our first priority is to support great pub-level play through easy access to Hi-Rez managed servers. We will also offer Custom Server support for players who want to manage and customize server-side game rules through configuration flags. The Custom Server functionality should support competitive play and tournaments as well as some of the community looking for specific mod-rules. For example, if a group wants to play Capture The Flag and have the base generators be more or less important there will be server configuration flags for that. Any actual mod-tools would be later and after release.
Aside from graphics, what are some of the biggest changes and features from past versions?
The biggest gameplay changes include: 1. class-based loadouts – so there is more diversity on the battlefield vs. everyone running around with a similar weapon-set, 2. progression within the match – so players earn credits in the match and then spend those credits in the same match on base upgrades or vehicles or call-ins – that way the intensity of each battle escalates over time, and 3. character progression between matches – a skill-tree and perks give players something to unlock over time and also a way to further specialize around playstyle.
Another big change is that we are releasing the game as free-to-play or fremium. Players download the game at no charge and unlock any game-affecting item simply by playing the game. But it is fremium in that players can spend money if they want to unlock items faster or get certain cosmetic items.
What have been the biggest challenges in creating the game and the biggest rewards?
Taking on an existing franchise is always a challenge because the fan-base has very specific expectations. Our decision to go free-to-play certainly challenged some of those expectations. But going free-to-play allows a large new audience to try out the fast-paced combat and we are seeing great response. So the biggest reward has been seeing both Tribes veterans and n00bs enjoy the game enough to tell their friends they should check it out.
How many weapons will be available and how many maps at the launch?
At launch we expect at least 30 weapons and 10 playable maps. With additional content coming very frequently after launch.
What can you tell us about the A.I. in the game and how many multiplay modes?
Given multiplayer focus, our AI is really limited to turrets – although they are pretty good at predicting player movement in the air.
The marquee game mode is Capture The Flag – which behaves as you would expect except that each side also has a base with functioning generators and base defenses, inventory stations and vehicle spawns. We also offer some more casual gamemodes such as Team Deathmatch and Rabbit. And we’ll continue to introduce new game-modes after release for free.
How many players will a game support and what are some of the mega weapons you have planned?
Currently we support up to 32 players. Mega-weapons would have to include the vehicles – a two-person GravCycle option, a Beowolf tank, and a fast flying Shrike; as well as call-ins like Tactical Strikes.
Will the game appear on consoles?
For now we are focused on the PC platform.

London Bridge Resort at Lake Havasu
To ease ourselves into the rush of the holiday season, we decided to spend a weekend at scenic Lake Havasu City where we stayed at the London Bridge Resort. The resort prides itself as the city’s only all-suite resort which sits on 110 waterfront acres, near the famous London Bridge. Capitalizing on the London theme, upon our entry, we were greeted with a full-size replica carriage of the wedding coach used by the royal family for generations. Check-in was very efficient and despite holiday parties scheduled that night, we were able to find ample free parking spots throughout the resort.
On our way to the room we checked out the gift shop, and noted the resort’s business center, game room, bar and restaurant. Our room was an extremely pleasant surprise as not only was there a full kitchen complete with dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, it was also supplied with all necessary kitchen utensils.
The kitchen overlooked a cozy dining area where meals can be at the dining table set for 2 or at the breakfast bar with comfortable bar stools. The spacious living room held a roomy couch, and opened up to a a patio with its own table and chairs as well. The bedroom was nicely appointed with a king-sized bed as well as a second television. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the bathroom which in addition to a very nice shower there was a jetted bathtub which had a fun, colorful light feature.
The resort offers lots of entertainment options for families and young adults. There are numerous pools at the resort, including a waterslide and a nightclub which was voted not only the largest the most popular outdoor nightclub in the city. There is also a shopping village behind the resort which offers a variety of restaurants and shops as well as easy access to the London Bridge.
Guests who walk under the bridge can take in a nice waterfront view, watercraft rentals, as well as numerous shops and restaurants. We had been told that the area is scheduled for renovation in the coming years by the helpful and friendly folks at the tourism office located just beside the bridge.
The hotel offered a great restaurant which offered room service as well as numerous dining options for those looking for something a little more formal than what the surrounding village offers. Although it is a casual setting, numerous steak and seafood options as well as appetizers were available. I selected the all-you-can-eat fish and chips which was an incredible bargain at only $9.99. The wife enjoyed teriyaki chicken skewers served with surprisingly taste green tea rice.
Guests may want to note that the bar is a very popular spot and some guests may encounter some noise in the resort depending on the activities and time of year that you are visiting. For our stay, I would say that the noise was fairly well-contained, although we occasionally did hear some of the celebrations going on nearby. The resort astutely supplies their bedside tables with earplugs in anticipation of this.
Another nice feature of the resort was seeing the surrounding area decked out in the holiday lights. There was an outdoor ice skating rink as well as a golf course adjacent to the resort and guests looking for full spa service will be happy to know it is also available on-site.
Across the street from the resort were numerous shops and restaurants as well as a movie theater, each of which was less than a 5 min. walk from the resort. For those looking to venture into town, it is a very easy city in which to drive around and offers numerous shopping and dining options ranging from local businesses to familiar chains.
The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating and the rooms were extremely comfortable to relax in, especially with the complementary HBO and full range of stations that were offered. To see just how versatile the resort was, we decided to pick up groceries from the local Safeway and had dinner in our room one evening as a change of pace from the dining out we been doing during our trip. We were easily able to complete our dinner and settle in for the night without any issues as after being so busy with all of the sightseeing and activities it was nice to just unwind with a quiet evening in.
As nice as the resort is,the amazing beauty of the surrounding area is truly something to behold. Bordering Arizona and California, the city has not only become a popular year-round tourist attraction, but it is a haven for spring break guests as well as Hollywood celebrities who flock to the gorgeous scenery and ample lakeshore while enjoying the small-town feel that offers all the comforts and amenities of a larger city.
London Bridge Resort surpassed our expectations and we thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing albeit too short visit. We look forward to returning in the future and we strongly suggest that you schedule a stay whenever you are in this incredible city.
