Little Big Planet 2

In a world where whimsical fantasy and puzzles combine to provide countless adventures, Sock Boy has returned in grand style in Little Big Planet 2. The title is available exclusively for the PlayStation 3 system and is the rare sequel that surpasses the original game.

Players take on the persona of a sock boy or girl and have countless options to dress and customize their characters which allows players to add their own unique touches to the game. Once adorned, players enter a series of themed arenas where they attempt to navigate various obstacles in order to complete a level.

While it sounds simple it is anything but. Players often find themselves moving at tremendous speeds when they hit a jump pad and pinball into other bumpers. Along the way there are objects to collect such as stickers which can be applied to open gates to levels within levels, or just decorate your world. Prize bubbles also hold new fabrics and other accessories to improve costumes.

While I enjoyed the first Little Big Planet game immensely, I can see how some, like my hubby, can a struggle at times with side scrolling games and making precise jumps. While his skill in this area has improved over the years, Little Big Planet 2, greatly improves play by adding a grappling gun giving our sock people “Spidey” powers. Use it to swing from platforms, ascend and descend and also help a friend out when playing the game in co-op mode, which you can with up to three other players.

What I really love about the game is the creative whimsy that makes the levels not only challenging but fun. I remember one bakery inspired level that had my hubby and I jumping from train car to train car and throwing explosive pastries at the enemies. Not only did we have fun figuring out how to use certain treats to navigate the level, but I took great delight in learning I could grab and throw my hubby’s character off the train. Of course, it wasn’t intentional. I was only trying to help him advance to the next car. Yeah. That’s it.

The game works well with gamers of all ages. We played the game with our niece and nephews, and had an absolutely fantastic time. One of the strengths of the game is the incredible amount of customization that is available. Not only can you make your character look like anything under the sun, you can also design your own levels and games and share them online with other gamers.

In this regard, Little Big Planet 2 has no ending as countless additional levels and games are constantly being added. With solid graphics and sound, Little Big Planet 2, focuses on content and playability rather than trying to dazzle you with an array of 3-D graphics. Sony has crafted a true classic that is a must-own for any PlayStation 3 owner and definitely a reason to buy the console.

Hall Pass

If you like your comedies like I like my blondes, dirty, then you will want to take Hall Pass home with you. But wait, you can’t just yet – it’s just opening in theaters today.

With Owen Wilson and Jenna Fischer playing married couple Rick & Maggie along with Jason Sudeikis and Christina Applegate playing their best friends, and fellow married couple, Fred & Grace, I walked into Hall Pass (a Farrelly Brothers movie) with a certain expectation. I wanted to laugh and I wanted to laugh hard. The movie surpassed my expectation, so much so in fact I plan on watching it again because I know I missed other jokes because I (along with everyone else) was laughing so much.

Now, if you are currently, or have ever been, in a romantic relationship with a fellow human being (if you’re an alien I’m not judging) then you may have asked yourself this very question, “If I could hook up with another person and not get caught would I?” Now let’s take it one step further. What if your significant other gave you a week off (yes, a whole week!) from the relationship? If you could hook up with as many people as you wanted to and you wouldn’t get in trouble for it, what would you do?

This is the situation that Rick and Fred find themselves in after Maggie and Grace become so upset over their husbands’ constant gawking of other women. They decide, thanks to the advise of Dr. Lucy (Joy Behar), to give their husbands a week off from marriage. In other words a “hall pass”. So Maggie takes the kids to her parents’ place for the week and Grace joins her. Rick and Fred are encouraged by three friends, who are happily married but want to live vicariously through the freed husbands, to embrace their newfound freedom. Of course, all sorts of wacky, incredibly funny and questionable high-jinks ensue. These Three Musketeers, or better yet, these three wise men, are brilliantly played by J.B. Smoove (Flats), Stephen Merchant (Gary) and thanks to Larry Joe Campbell (Hog-Head) I will never look at a sand trap the same way again. The movie also has some very nicely placed cameos, I don’t want to spoil the surprise on who they are.

Just like a sword a Hall Pass cuts both ways and Maggie and Grace soon discover that they too can enjoy a break from marriage. Unfortunately their adventures are nowhere near as humorous as the guys so I’m not going to focus much on them. As the week comes to an end, and after many adventures have been had, the questions become will the couples stay together? Will they go their separate ways? Or (possibly) will they go to the 2011 National Swingers Convention?

This movie is more than just a comedy, it is also educational. You will learn the dangers of: homemade brownies; why a thong can be wrong; why it is unwise to upset a DJ barista; whose lap to lay your head upon when saved from drowning; why aliens should avoid people from New Jersey (the comment will take too long to explain but there are no aliens in the movie); how a fast pitch can be a sign of something else; and, most importantly, words can hurt.

4.25 out of 5 Splendas (you have to see the movie to get the joke)

As the summer of 1988 winds down, three friends on the verge of adulthood attend an out-of-control party in celebration of their last night of unbridled youth. Starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer, Take Me Home Tonight is a raunchy, romantic and ultimately touching blast from the past set to an awesome soundtrack of timeless rock and hip-hop hits.

Recent MIT grad Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) should be working for a Fortune 500 company and starting his upward climb to full-fledged yuppie-hood. Instead, the directionless 23-year-old confounds family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria.

But Matt’s silent protest against maturity comes to a screeching halt once his unrequited high school crush, Tori Frederking (Teresa Palmer), walks into the store. When she invites him to an epic, end-of-summer party, Matt thinks he finally might have a chance with the girl of his dreams. With his cynical twin sister Wendy (Anna Faris) and best friend Barry (Dan Fogler), Matt embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime evening. From stealing a car to a marriage proposal to an indescribable, no-holds-barred dance-off, these friends share experiences that will change the course of their lives on one unforgettable night in the Go-Go ’80s.

Unknown

Liam Neeson is Dr. Martin Harris, a botanist who is invited to discuss his theories at a bio tech conference in Berlin. Martin and his wife Elizabeth (January Jones) arrive and while checking in to the hotel, the receptionist asks for Martin’s identification.

As he searches around he notices that his briefcase is missing and that he must have left it back at the airport. He decides to go back to retrieve it leaving Elizabeth behind to take care of the room and to settle in. Martin soon ends up in a terrible accident which leaves him in a coma for four days and with a slight case of amnesia, or so he thinks. Everything has gone awry and nobody knows who Martin is not even his wife Elizabeth. She claims her husband is a different man but with the same name. Leaving Martin completely confused and thinking he has gone totally insane.

Martin decides to look for Gena (Diane Kruger) the cab driver that crashed their cab, to see if she may know something about his situation. They gain trust and become allies to figure out what really is going on with Dr. Martin Harris’ life. What follows is an action packed thrill ride for thrill seekers who love to be kept at the edge of their seats. The cinematography is excellent as well as the scores used to keep your heart pumping during action packed scenes.

“Unknown” is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra who in the past has worked on other suspenseful projects such as The House of Wax and Orphan. Jaume’s movies are known to keep you at the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next.

Liam Neeson has always picked great projects to work on and characters to portray. “Unknown” is an outstanding movie with a powerhouse cast that literally dives right into the action only minutes from the beginning of the movie. With two thumbs up and a five star rating I definitely recommend this movie to everyone.
