Madden 10

With the NFL Season underway, it is time for gamers to satiate their pigskin frenzy with the latest in the best selling Madden series from EA Sports. Madden 10 features a host of new features including a new animation system for even greater realism and immersion into the world of the NFL.

Players can select from all 32 NFL teams and are able to select variables such as stadium, weather conditions.

Gameplay has been enhanced as Madden 10 offers greatly improved control and interaction which also features a greatly improved blocking system and online co-op play.

Another nice feature is the post game show, Extra Point which allows for greater immersion into the NFL experience as it allows players to have a post game show of their game which along with the already enhanced broadcast style and player animations, allows players to get as close to an NFL gameday as possible without taking the field.

One of the new and sure to be controversial new features of the game is the fight for fumble option that allows players to battle for a loose ball. Some have complained that such a key point of a game has come down to little more than a button mashing mini game. Others like myself though look at this new feature las yet a new wrinkle into the game that adds a new dimension ot the game.

I found fighting for fumbles entertaining but I did have moments of frustration as being the first one on the ball does not always secure possession.

Gameplay has been enhanced by the ability to alter game speed to match your style of play. This is a very tough game about a highly competitive league so it is nice to see the designers allow players not to be overwhelmed at first by the speed of the game play, which requires split second decisions.

Aside from the solo play, the game also offers online play and the previously mentioned Co-Op play. The Online Franchise mode has been greatly enhanced and works much better than the previous game. I would still love the ability to trade draft picks, but at least the feature is moving in a better direction.

At the end of the day, Madden 10 offers amazing graphics and reality, and the designers have taken great steps to address many of the concerns fans had in previous games.

Hilton Hotel and Conference Center, Eugene Oregon

Recently my wife and I traveled to Eugene Oregon to do a few stories for the site and upcoming magazine. After spending a week in Southern California covering theme parks and area attractions we had a long trip ahead of us back to the Northwest.

After a 14 hr drive that began at 4AM. We were very grateful to arrive in the scenic and charming town of Eugene. It had been several years since I last visited the town and I found that time has made me appreciate the many things the town has to offer, and see it for more than just a college town.

The hotel also features a conference center which is ideal for everything from meetings to school graduations and is located very close to the University of Oregon.

Checking in was very smooth and the front desk staff was very helpful as we were given a map of the downtown area and several points of interest.

After checking in, we went downtown and visited an old haunt of mine, the Mission Mexican restaurant. I had fondly remembered the homemade cheese sauce and salsa that comes with your welcome basket of chips, and the fantastic fresh vegetables that accompanied our order was even better than I remembered as were the very large portions.

After dinner, the town’s scenic sites were very enjoyable as was seeing the Willamette River as it winds its way through town and some of the scenic parks in the area.

The hotel offered a secure parking garage that needed a key card to enter and exit and was a very easy elevator ride to our room.

The room had a great view of the downtown area and was furnished with two Queen Beds, a chair, a mini fridge and desk, as well as a television and hair dryer and coffee service.

The bathroom was very nice and featured shampoo and other products from Crabtree and Evelyn which were a huge step above what is usually provided by hotels.

The flat screen television in the room was a nice touch as well as the variety of stations which included movie channels and the ability to purchase the latest films as well as other films from an on demand section.
The hotel does offer free internet, and offers a pool, fitness center, restaurant, lounge, concierge, and numerous amenities’ for all of your family and business needs.

The hotel offers an impressive room service menu and also offers dry cleaning and other nice features such as safety deposit boxes and the hotel is located near several restaurants and shops downtown.

Many luxury hotels nickel and dime guests for such features as internet access and parking, but the hotel addressed all of our needs no matter how basic or complex, and many times without even having to ask for anything as upon check in, I was provided what I needed to get online, as well as other services.

Following a very nice rest in the comfy beds, we got up and started our day. Having a large memory foam bed at home often makes travel difficult as many beds are not large enough and tend to be uncomfortable compared to what we have come to expect. The Beds at the Hilton were very restful and provided just what we needed after a long trip.

The hotel offered a Noon checkout on Sunday and this helped us get a good start to our final day in the area as checking out was very quick and pleasant. We spent the rest of the morning looking over locations for future coverage and notating the full schedule of events that was on the City of Eugene’s website.

While we wished we could have stayed longer, we needed to return to Washington but made plans to continue our series on one of the Northwest’s hidden gems, Eugene Oregon.

Blizzcon 09 Final Report

By Jeff Lange and Trista Olson

What do you get when 20,000 rabid gamers descend on one convention center for two days in Anaheim, California? That’s right, it’s Blizzcon 2009 and it’s bigger and crazier than ever. One year ago here I threw down the gauntlet in Blizzard’s direction, saying that if they intend to make Blizzcon a yearly event, they’d better bring more to the table than announcing that there will be a caster class (wizard) in a game that’s multiple years away from release (Diablo 3). Well Blizzard picked up that gauntlet, placed a laser cannon in it’s grip, and blasted me right in the face. Blizzcon 2009 hit, and it hit hard. Incredible announcements, Insightful panels, Show-stopping gameplay, hard-fought tournaments, and a concert hosted by none other than the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne rattled the walls of the Anaheim Convention Center for two days and nights, giving avid Blizzard fans just what they were looking for.

The sheer volume of bodies present at the convention would stun a first time visitor to Blizzcon. In fact, for the first half of day one, it was difficult to get around. So. Many. People. This year, Blizzard secured all four main halls of the convention center (up from 3 in 2009, and 2 in 2007, 2005) and really packed the house. With 20,000 tickets being sold out in less than a minute, it’s curious to wonder just how many people would purchase tickets to this event and attend if size and logistics would permit? 50,000? 100,000? 200,000? It’s mind boggling to say the least. Although lines were daunting, they were much improved this year. Lines to play demos moved rather quickly, and the Blizzard store, a soulcrushing ogre of a line in years past, was manageable and well stocked.

Even on the second half of day two, I found myself able to purchase the items I wanted. Third party vendors were in full swing, many taking a page out of the book of companies like J!nx and offering fun interactive games and demonstrations to attract convention goers. In the past, I have found myself late on day 2 wondering what was left to do. This year, I found myself running from place to place screaming, “Oh my god let’s go do that!!!”

World of Warcraft needs no introduction. It’s the biggest game in the world. Period. Hey, and since it’s the biggest game, let’s go ahead and add to that. Boom. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is next in line to expand the universe, and not one but two new playable races are set to make their debut: Worgen for the Alliance, and Goblins for the Horde. You know what to expect right? New zones, dungeons, levels, creatures, quests, and NPCs all will grab you by the throat and demand what remains of your real life. However, what you may not have been expecting is a complete makeover of the Azeroth world. It’s called Cataclysm for a reason folks.

The world of Azeroth is going to be ripped open and landscapes changed forever to reflect the tumultuous times. Blizzard has also promised new quests, better level flow from zone to zone, and amazing fleshing out of the existing world. In previous expansions, players have been asked to get to know and love new areas and content. You’re going to have that in WoW: Cataclysm, but what you’re also going to get is new twists and excitement from familiar content. Remember that girl from high school that hung out with your group of friends sometimes. She was funny, kinda cute, and smart. Well now you’re both back home from college for the summer and she looks drop dead gorgeous! Oh, and she wants to know if you’re free this weekend. Clear your calendar when this one hits. You may not want to turn away from your computer when it does.

Jacked up and good to go! That’s how Starcraft 2 looks, plays, and feels. The release date of the game has been pushed back to early 2010, but from seeing the game itself, it seems that much of that may be due to the fine tuning of the new and vastly improved Battlenet matchmaker system which is firmly integrated into the Starcraft 2 experience. (More on that later.)

The single player campaign is an immersive experience. You will be involved deeply with the story delving into the personal lives of the main characters through cinematics and an impressive briefing room (Reminds me of Wing Commander. And who didn’t love Wing Commander? That’s right, nobody.) The ability to select what unit types you wish to develop between missions and a new emphasis on earning money will help to bridge missions together for a central purpose instead of feeling like separate jobs rattled off one after another to progress the story. Time and time again while talking about Starcraft 2, Blizzard developers stressed that missions are going to be of numerous variable types. You aren’t going to simply build-defend-attack 20 times and call that a campaign. As an example, developers discussed a mission where the goal was to harvest a ton of minerals.

Sounds simple, right? Well, not so simple in a hostile environment where raising and lowering lava can overwhelm your buildings and workers, leaving you hopeless. You’ll have to battle the environment as well as any unsympathetic forces that may be in the area in order to complete your goal. This is just one of what was promised to be many different types of new and fun ways to make missions fun and unique. Maybe the most exciting element of Starcraft 2 is the map editor. Actually, forget the term map editor. It’s more like a complete game editor. Players will be able to edit nearly every component of the game and create new and exciting ways to play Starcraft that we have never even thought of. Keep your eyes open on this one. The Starcraft game editor might be flying under the radar for now, but I’d bet anything that it’s going to be a tremendous influence on the Starcraft gaming experience. It may be over 10 years since the last Starcraft game, but this one is definitely going to be worth the wait.

Although still a long ways off, Diablo 3 completed the trilogy of Blizzard universes at Blizzcon 2009. This time, another class was unveiled to the masses – the Monk. Fists of Fury and blazing speed are his weapons. The best announcement about Diablo 3 came in one of the Q+A sessions with the attendees. One of the most hated things about Diablo 2 was watching the item you worked so hard to get be snatched up by some punk who had nothing to do with defeating the monsters.

Well players will be given one less reason to smash their mouse against the wall thanks to individualized loot drops. Your group kills a mob and it has a chance to drop loot for every player, and only that player. Take your time to dance around that unique ring that just dropped by your toes, because your buddy is going to be busy jitterbugging around his new axe. My main concern with Diablo 3 is still gameplay innovation. Is the classic “point-click-kill-loot” style gameplay going to be enough to satisfy today’s evolving gamer? Replayability is still a huge question mark with this one for me. Another concern I have is with the online component. I played a round of multiplayer with three friends of mine. This wasn’t just some pickup group. We’ve played together for years in guilds in various different games.

Like many gamers, we’re used to working together, strategizing, and executing our plans to achieve victory. Well battle tactics for this game seem to consist of one thing. “OMG there they are! Get them!” Well we got ‘em. How could we not? Every ability seemed to unleash lethal blow after blow splattering our enemies into piles of blood and bone. Yes, that’s great up to a point, but it doesn’t make for interesting or challenging gameplay. Rather, it just makes for a screen full of blood, confusion, and spam clicking on everything. I understand different people like different types of games, but to me this just feels like World of Warcraft minus any type of combat strategy plus gallons of gore. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong as development of this game continues. There’s still plenty of time.

The term “revolutionary” is thrown around a lot in the gaming industry, but it is seldom warranted. With that in mind, I’m fully confident that it is indeed the word revolutionary that best describes Blizzard’s new Battlenet service. More than just a matchmaking device, the new Battlenet looks to be turning games into communities. Imagine being able to find long lost friends from different games. Imagine true tiered ladder Starcraft leagues, giving everyone a chance to compete against those of comparable skill.

Imagine watching replays of professional Starcraft games complete with audio commentary right off of Battlenet. This new service is closing the gaps between individual games, bringing everyone together in one big Blizzard community of gaming. As many tremendous announcements as Blizzcon 2009 unveiled, I believe looking back 5 years from now, we will all remember the birth of this new Battlenet community system as being the most important moment. It’s that big.

I was asked a few times why Blizzard moved this year’s Blizzcon to August rather than the customary October. Prior to the convention, I didn’t have an answer. I have one now. Blizzard is bursting with exciting ideas and news and just couldn’t wait to tell everyone! The developers and senior Blizzard staff were so passionate and full of energy talking about all their new offerings. Blizzard brought the big guns out this year, no question about it. Part of me wishes that Blizzcon could have continued on another week for more fun, but most of me says, “Blizzard you rock! But playtime is over, get back in that studio and crank this stuff out! It looks great!”

Starcraft 2 FAQs from Blizzcon 2009

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty General

Q: What is StarCraft II?

A: StarCraft II is the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, and the sequel to the hit original, StarCraft. The game will include three completely distinct and balanced races, the protoss, terran, and zerg, which have been overhauled and re-imagined with a number of new units for each, as well as new tricks for some of the classic units that are returning.

Q: When is the game coming out?

A: Our release target for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the first half of 2010. As with all Blizzard Entertainment games, we will take as much time as needed to ensure the game is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible.

Q: When will you begin the beta test for StarCraft II?

A: We’re not ready to give an exact date, but we’re working hard to release the beta as soon as possible.

Q: How will StarCraft II be different from StarCraft?

A: StarCraft II will run on a vibrant new 3D-graphics engine capable of rendering beautiful landscapes as well as massive army sizes. The speed, responsiveness, and epic-scale battles that made the original StarCraft such a memorable game are all realized in 3D with this brand-new engine.

We’re also introducing a number of distinct new units to the protoss, terran, and zerg, and some of the familiar units that return in StarCraft II will have new tricks up their sleeves, which will give the game its own unique flavor. The maps themselves will also offer new interactive elements that enhance the strategic nature of the game and create more tactical points of interest for players to contest. One example of this is the Xel’Naga watchtower structure—when captured, it reveals line of sight over a large area of the map, creating an advantage for the player in control of the tower.

In addition, Battle.net will be overhauled with some new and exciting features to enhance online play and competition, while the single-player campaign will also offer some unique aspects for players to enjoy. The single-player campaign in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty features branching missions and the ability to customize your army by purchasing special units and upgrades that persist between missions.

Q: How do players customize their army in the single-player campaign of Wings of Liberty?

A: The campaign offers players different ways to customize their armies to suit their playing style and better tackle the challenges within the missions. Credits earned from completing missions can be used to buy the services of mercenary units that players can deploy in battle. Mercenaries are more powerful versions of standard units in the game; for example, Kel’Morian mercenary marines have higher armor and damage output than a regular marine. Any skilled mercenaries that players opt to unlock can be built from the merc haven structure within each mission.

Additionally, players can opt to buy campaign-only technology upgrades for their units. Examples of upgrades that might be available for purchase include improved bunkers with gun turrets and upgraded flamethrowers that allow firebats to attack a wider radius.

Q: How do missions work in the single-player campaign?

A: As players make their way through the campaign, they’ll interact with a number of different non-player characters (NPCs) who will offer a variety of missions. In many cases, players will choose from a few different NPCs at the same time. Some of these missions will advance the main story, while others lead to interesting subplots. Players will be able to view briefings that detail mission objectives, show how many credits are rewarded for completion, and tell you which new unit, if any, is unlocked by taking on the mission.

More than 25 missions will be available in the Wings of Liberty campaign, and each mission will offer different objectives and gameplay elements. For example, one mission will have players roving around a map to intercept and rob Dominion cargo trains moving along different railroad tracks. Another mission will take place in a volcanically unstable area. Lava will periodically flood the lower elevations of the map, requiring players to exercise extra caution in their mining operations and troop movement.

Many missions also offer optional research objectives, such as exploring maps to find lost protoss artifacts or a hidden zerg chrysalis. When players collect enough of these research objects over the course of a few missions, they can earn upgrades and improvements for their units that carry over for the rest of the campaign.

Q: How will players interact with NPCs and explore in between missions?

A: In between each mission, players will be able to explore various sets within the game. These include the bar on Mar Sara and the Hyperion battlecruiser that acts as Raynor’s flagship. Players can click on different characters in these environments to converse with them and get additional details about the story. These conversations are fully voice-acted, and the characters and sets are animated in detail in the game engine.

Sets will also contain interactive objects that players can click to receive extra information and story details. Televisions, for example, will show news reports that detail happenings around the galaxy. Console units, such as the one in the armory on board the Hyperion, allow players to access the tech-purchasing interface. The star map on the bridge of the Hyperion lets players choose from various mission briefings.

All of these elements are designed to help bring players closer to the characters in the game and offer additional story avenues for those who wish to immerse themselves in the game’s epic plot.

Q: How many races are in StarCraft II?

A: In StarCraft II, players will see the return of the protoss, terran, and zerg races. Our goal is to ensure that all of the factions in the game play even more distinctly from one another than in the original StarCraft, while still maintaining the fine balance that helped make StarCraft a classic. We’re also introducing a number of new units to each race, as well as modifying some of the familiar units returning in StarCraft II. With these design refinements and the new features we have planned for the single-player and multiplayer elements of the game, StarCraft II will offer a next-generation StarCraft experience.

Q: Can you give some examples of the newest changes in StarCraft II?

A: The most significant changes we’ve made recently are some new game mechanics that impact the economic efficiency of each of the races. The protoss can create a structure called the obelisk with a “proton charge” ability, which temporarily speeds up the rate at which probes can harvest minerals. If used properly, this ability can noticeably increase the protoss’ income.

The terrans have a new unit called the mule, which can be summoned from the orbital command building. Mules harvest minerals much like SCVs, but at a much faster rate — however, they only last for a specific amount of time. Since the ability costs energy, terran players must decide how much of their energy to spend calling down mules and how much to save for the orbital command’s other ability, the comsat scan.

Finally, the zerg can boost their production capability by using the queen to spawn extra larvae periodically in hatcheries, allowing them to quickly field large armies.

Q: It seems like there are sweeping balance changes almost every time I read about StarCraft II. What are the reasons for the changes?

A: As we go through various testing stages, the development team experiments a lot with the game balance. This can include adding, removing, and/or modifying various units, buildings, and special abilities within the game. Frequent changes to units and abilities are a natural part of our iterative development process as we strive to make StarCraft II as balanced and fun as possible.

Battle.net

Q: Will Battle.net be overhauled? Will there be new features?

A: There will be some exciting new changes and features to Battle.net that will help us ensure that StarCraft II will be the ultimate competitive online real-time strategy game. Some of the areas we’re working on include features that support online tournaments, eSports, and enhanced communication between players.

Q: What steps are being taken to prevent cheating in multiplayer games?

A: We don’t want to tip our hand to the people who may try to cheat on Battle.net, so we can’t go into too much detail, but rest assured that security is one of our top priorities as we redesign and overhaul Battle.net, and we will take every precaution to ensure fairness in our online games. We’ve taken an aggressive stance against cheating in all of our games, and our players have overwhelmingly supported us in that, so we don’t have any intention to make any changes in that regard.

Technical Aspects

Q: What are the system requirements for StarCraft II?

A: We’ll have more details on specific system requirements closer to the release date. For now, we can say that the game will require a graphics processor that is Pixel Shader 2.0 compatible.

Q: Will StarCraft II include a map editor?

A: Yes, it will. We’ll have more details on the features of the StarCraft II map editor at a later date.

Q: Will there be a console version of StarCraft II?

A: StarCraft II is being developed for Windows and Mac. We have no current plans to bring the game to any console platform.

Diablo 3 FAQs from Blizzcon 2009

DIABLO III FAQ
Q: What is Diablo III?
A: We’re developing Diablo III to be the definitive action role-playing game, and a true continuation of the Diablo series. Players will adventure through rich and varied settings, unraveling an epic storyline, engaging in combat with hordes of monsters and challenging bosses, growing in experience and ability, and acquiring items of incredible power. Diablo III will be a fitting sequel to Diablo II, with the easy interface, fast-paced action, and visceral gameplay that Diablo players have come to expect and enjoy. It will also include many new features that will take the Diablo action-RPG experience to the next level.
Q: Which characters will be in Diablo III?
A: Players will create a male or female hero from one of five distinct classes, such as barbarian, witch doctor, wizard, or monk, each equipped with an array of spells and abilities. New customization options will provide for an even greater level of character specialization than the previous Diablo games, allowing the player to create unique characters brimming with power.
Q: What can you say about the announced classes?
A: Returning from Diablo II, the dual-wielding barbarian is one of the stoic guardians of Mount Arreat. Retooled with powerful new abilities and moves, this plate-wearing savage wields ferocious weapons to annihilate the demonic forces threatening the world of Sanctuary.
The fearsome witch doctor hails from the terrifying Tribe of the Five Hills of the legendary umbaru race. The witch doctor is equipped with spells and alchemical powers; can summon mongrels, locust swarms, and zombie armies; and hurls fiery concoctions to annihilate any demon foolish enough to trifle with the powers of the umbaru.
The wizard is a wielder of the elements and a master manipulator of time, who combats the hordes of the Burning Hells by launching environment-shattering lightning bolts, channeling explosive arcane energies, and creating pockets of space outside of the normal flow of time.
The monk is a skilled warrior of unparalleled dexterity. Armed with speed, holy fervor, and a quest for physical and spiritual perfection, the monk becomes a deadly apparition in the heat of battle, moving faster than the eye can follow to strike down enemies with a barrage of lightning-fast blows.

Q: How did the new monk character class come about?

We wanted to add another melee character that was still hard-hitting, but lightning fast, to complement the raw strength and brutality of the barbarian. When we set out to design the monk, we wanted him to feel elegant and fluid, like something out of a fighting game. What we came up with is a holy warrior and martial artist who uses a unique arsenal of weaponry, hand-to-hand combat techniques, and a distinctive combo-based attack system.

Q: What is the story of Diablo III?

A: The game takes place on Sanctuary, a world of dark fantasy. Unbeknownst to most of its inhabitants, Sanctuary was saved some twenty years ago from the demonic forces of the underworld by a few brave and powerful heroes. Most of those warriors who directly faced Hell’s armies — and were fortunate enough to survive — went mad from their experiences. And most of the others have buried their haunted memories and pushed the horrors from their thoughts. In Diablo III, players will return to Sanctuary to confront evil in its many forms once again.
Q: Will Diablo III be running on a new engine?
A: Diablo III is powered by a new graphics engine that can display characters and hordes of monsters in lush, fully 3D environments. Powerful special-effects systems and Havok-powered physics allow for realistic object dynamics and cloth simulation, and enable players to lay waste to the minions of the Burning Hells in spectacular ways.
Q: Will Diablo still have randomized events?
A: Diablo III builds on the random environments of the previous Diablo games by adding random scripted events and encounters throughout the game, creating a dense and exciting world alive with quests, NPCs, and dynamic encounters.
Q: What can you tell us about Battle.net?
A: Diablo III will benefit from Battle.net upgrades that will provide some exciting new features for players. Cooperative online play remains a primary focus, with multiple enhancements being planned to make connecting with your friends easier and cooperative play even more fun. We’ll have more details on all these aspects as well as other exciting new features at a later date.
Q: How will PvP be implemented in Diablo III?
A: With regard to the multiplayer component of Diablo III, the emphasis will be on cooperative play, but we will also include support for competitive play. What form that support will take is still being discussed, but we are being careful to avoid features that can easily lead to griefing, such as the ability to go hostile at will.
Q: When will Diablo III be released?
A: It’s too early to estimate Diablo III’s release date. As with all Blizzard Entertainment games, our goal is to create a game that is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible. We intend to take as much time developing Diablo III as is necessary to ensure the game meets our own high expectations and those of our players. We’re aiming to release Diablo III on both Mac and Windows simultaneously in as many regions as possible, and to localize the game in several languages. We’ll have more details to share about countries, languages, and specific dates as we get closer to release.

Q: What will Diablo III be rated?

A: The Diablo III rating will be determined by the ratings boards in each region. We still have a good amount of work to do content-wise, so we’re not quite ready to submit the game for ratings yet.

Q: Will players interact with any familiar faces or places in Diablo III?
A: Yes, definitely. Players will return to Tristram and certain other locations from the previous games and they’ll also be exploring new areas of Sanctuary. Players will also encounter several new characters as well as a number of characters from the previous games including Deckard Cain.
Q: What will questing be like in Diablo III? Will it be similar to Diablo II?
A: Our plans for the story and quest mechanics are still under wraps. We’ll go into detail on those elements of the game at a later date. We can say, however, that we expect to have class-based quests in addition to the main story-line quests.
Q: What are the system requirements for Diablo III?
A: We’ll announce specific system requirements at a later date.

World of Warcraft Cataclysm FAQs

Q: What is the story of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm?

A: While the attention of the Horde and Alliance remained fixed upon Northrend, an ancient evil has been lying dormant within Deepholm, the domain of earth in the Elemental Plane. Hidden away in a secluded sanctuary, the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing has waited, recovering from the wounds of his last battle against Azeroth, nursing his hatred for the inferior creatures that infest the surface realm…and biding his time until he can reforge the world in molten fire.

Soon, Deathwing the Destroyer will return to Azeroth, and his eruption from Deepholm will sunder the world, leaving a festering wound across the continents. As the Horde and Alliance race to the epicenter of the cataclysm, the kingdoms of Azeroth will witness seismic shifts in power, the kindling of a war of the elements, and the emergence of unlikely heroes who will rise up to protect their scarred and broken world from utter devastation.

The face of Azeroth is altered forever as the destruction left in Deathwing’s wake reshapes the land and reveals secrets long sealed away. Players will be able to re-experience familiar zones across Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, rewrought by the cataclysm and filled with new opportunities for adventure.

Q: What are the features of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm?

A: Some of the new features of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm include:
• Two New Playable Races: Adventure as one of two new races–the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.
• Level Cap Increased to 85: Earn new abilities, tap into new talents, and progress through the path system, a new way for players to customize characters.
• Classic Zones Remade: Familiar zones across the original continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have been altered forever and updated with new content, from the devastated Badlands to the broken Barrens, which has been sundered in two.
• New High-Level Zones: Explore newly opened parts of the world, including Uldum, Grim Batol, and the great Sunken City of Vashj’ir beneath the sea.
• More Raid Content than Ever Before: Enjoy more high-level raid content than previous expansions, with optional more challenging versions of all encounters.
• New Race and Class Combinations: Explore Azeroth as a gnome priest, blood elf warrior, or one of the other never-before-available race and class combinations.
• Guild Advancement: Progress as a guild to earn guild levels and guild achievements.
• New PvP Zone & Rated Battlegrounds: Take on PvP objectives and daily quests on Tol Barad Island, a new Wintergrasp-like zone, and wage war in all-new rated Battlegrounds.
• Archaeology: Master a new secondary profession to unearth valuable artifacts and earn unique rewards.
• Flying Mounts in Azeroth: Explore Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms like never before.
Q: Why are you revisiting the continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms?
A: As we developed new content and expansions, we learned a lot of techniques to provide players with a better game experience–but the majority of the new content we were creating was for high-level characters only. We felt we could apply the lessons of Outland and Northrend to improve the gameplay experience while leveling in the original two continents. Imagine revisiting a familiar zone like Darkshore only to find Auberdine destroyed by the cataclysm–and then discovering entirely new towns and quests in other parts of the zone.

Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms are central to World of Warcraft lore, and we want those areas to remain an important part of the game, not just a place to train or auction. Our goal is to make questing, leveling, and the overall story more fun for new, returning, and existing players. By redesigning areas of the original continents and introducing new content that matches or exceeds the quality of Wrath of the Lich King, we can revitalize the nostalgia and coolness of Azeroth.

Q: How did you decide upon the two new playable races, worgen and goblin?
A: The community has been requesting to play as the goblins for quite some time now, and we wanted to stick with at least one race that players were very familiar with. This expansion was the perfect time to bring the goblins to the forefront and offer more insight into their past, since the catastrophic events of the expansion really hit close to home.

As for the worgen, players have been hoping to be able to learn more about them since Silverpine Forest. This is a great opportunity to explore their lore and the mysteries of the Greymane Wall. The worgen are an aggressive and beastly race, which is something you see often among the Horde races, but is unique among the Alliance races.

Q: Will the two new races have all-new starting experiences?
A: Yes, we are creating all-new level 1 to 15 starting zones for both races. Players will start their adventures with the worgen in Gilneas, which was sealed off behind the Greymane Wall. Goblin players will start on the Isle of Kezan and then head to the Lost Isles in the South Seas before joining the mainland. Each starting experience will be presented in a fashion similar to the death knight starting area in Wrath of the Lich King, and these starting zones will make extensive use our new phased-terrain technology.

Q: Which classic zones have been overhauled? What are some examples of changes?
A: Nearly all of the game’s original zones are being altered to some degree, but the extent of the changes varies by zone. For example, Darkshore is flooded and has been completely redesigned with all new quest hubs. The Barrens have been split in two; one half is for low-level players and the other is for higher-level players. Azshara is now a low-level zone for Horde players and connects directly to Orgrimmar.

Q: Is another Hero class being added to the game?
A: We are not planning to add a new Hero class in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. For this expansion, it was more appropriate to focus on the two new races, the goblins and worgen. We never intended to include a Hero class in every expansion. As you saw with death knights, adding a new class changes the dynamics of the game dramatically, which is not something we want to do in every expansion. We still have plans to introduce new Hero classes in the future.

Q: Will I be able to use my flying mount in the redesigned Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor?
A: Yes. While the original Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor weren’t designed for flying mounts, we’re redesigning the continents with flying mounts in mind. However, we’re still determining whether there will be any restrictions on where you will be able to fly, at what level flying will become available, or whether you’ll need to do anything to unlock it. We’ll share more details about this in the future.

Q: Will I need the expansion to be able to experience the Cataclysm changes?
A: When the Cataclysm occurs, it will occur for all players, whether they have purchased the expansion or not–you will no longer be able to play in the original version of Kalimdor or the Eastern Kingdoms. However, certain features such as the new zones, new races, and new level cap will only be accessible to players who purchase the expansion.

Q: Will “phasing” be used more extensively in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm?
A: Yes. We’ve come up with a number of new, cool ways to use phasing since we introduced it in Wrath of the Lich King, and plan to use it more extensively to change the world as players progress. We are also now able to phase terrain, which players will see in the starting areas for the goblins and worgen. We’re also adding some UI improvements to help determine when another player is in a different “phase” from you.

Q: Will there be any updates to the graphics and changes to the minimum system requirements?
A: Yes, there will be incremental tweaks and updates to the graphics engine in this expansion. For example, we’ve made improvements to the way that water is rendered. We’ll announce the exact system requirements closer to the expansion’s release.

Battlenet FAQs from Blizzcon 2009

Battle.net FAQ

What is the new Battle.net?
We are building the new Battle.net to be the premier online gaming destination. The new Battle.net experience is a full-featured online game service designed specifically around Blizzard Entertainment titles, and will include a complete set of around-the-game features including a state-of-the-art matchmaking system, achievement system, social networking features, structured competitive play options, a marketplace, and much more. Our vision is to create an environment where gamers can compete online, develop an online persona, and stay connected to friends and the rest of the community while enjoying our games. In doing this, the new Battle.net will deliver the ultimate social and competitive experience for Blizzard Entertainment gamers everywhere.

What is the history of Battle.net?
Battle.net was the world’s first fully integrated matchmaking service, which we launched in 1996 with the release of Diablo. Battle.net evolved over the years to fully incorporate online gameplay for StarCraft, Diablo II, a re-release of Warcraft II, and Warcraft III. The Battle.net system has been in its current form, without major changes, since 2003.

How much will Battle.net cost?
The new Battle.net will be offered free of charge for players who purchase and register the full version of StarCraft II.

What will be available to players in the StarCraft II Marketplace?
After the launch of StarCraft II, we aim to add the StarCraft II Marketplace to Battle.net, which will create a vibrant ecosystem of user-generated content, including multiplayer maps, single-player scenarios, challenges, themes, and more.

How will Battle.net affect my multiplayer StarCraft II experience?
We’ll be implementing a new auto-matchmaking system, with advanced skill tracking to allow players to be matched with other players of similar skill level. This will help players consistently face evenly matched competition. We’ll also be implementing various leagues and ladder systems to allow a more competitive StarCraft II landscape.

What is the Real ID feature?
Real ID is at the forefront of online gaming as it will allow you to easily connect, communicate, and play with real-life friends. Connect with old friends and current guildies, and make new friends with the integrated Battle.net social networking tools. Beyond simply seeing your friend’s character names (e.g. “Gorlac” in World of Warcraft or “Snip3r” in StarCraft II), and having to remember which character name goes with which friend, you will be able to see your Real ID friend and chat with him or her across Blizzard games. What’s more, Real ID is totally optional — the options are there for you to build your Blizzard Entertainment social network however you see fit.

What are some of the communication tools available in the new Battle.net?
Our vision is for the new Battle.net to become the ultimate Blizzard Entertainment social network, in addition to its matchmaking foundation. Simply logging in to Battle.net will make it easy to find and chat with your friends across World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and future Blizzard Entertainment titles, including Diablo III. Keep track of all your buddies in your friends list, view their online status and presence information, voice chat, send out party invites, and broadcast messages to your friends. Detailed character profiles let players keep up to date on friends’ progress and achievements.

What kind of Battle.net features will be available to allow player-made customizations?
Over the years, we’ve learned how incredibly creative the Blizzard Entertainment community is, and that they excel at creating new ways to play our games (such as DotA). This has served as the inspiration for us to create a rich set of content authoring and publishing tools in Battle.net for gamers to create the next big game type in StarCraft II.

When will I be able to start utilizing map maker tools? How will Battle.net interact with custom maps?
The StarCraft II Galaxy Map Editor will be available to players during the StarCraft II beta. Players will be able to play these maps on the new Battle.net.

Will classic Blizzard Entertainment games be supported on the new Battle.net?
We do eventually plan to update all classic Battle.net games to take advantage of the new Battle.net accounts and server infrastructure. Beyond this, we do not have anything to announce today regarding legacy Blizzard Entertainment titles and the new Battle.net experience.

Will parental controls be improved on Battle.net?
We will be revamping the parental controls and time management features for the release of Battle.net. The parental controls will allow parents to regulate how and with whom their children communicate, and they will provide parents with a multitude of other tools to promote responsible gaming for their children.

Will a forced migration to Battle.net occur for World of Warcraft players?
Yes, sometime in the near future, it will be necessary for all World of Warcraft subscribers to transition their accounts to the new Battle.net system. Those players who have already converted to the new system will be able to take part in the new Battle.net features soon.

What will change in World of Warcraft after the forced migration?
The core gameplay experience will remain unchanged as a result of the migration. However, you’ll be able to take part in all of the new Battle.net features, such as cross-realm, cross-faction, and cross-game chat.

What features will be available for Diablo III on the new Battle.net?
We don’t have any specific features to announce at this time, but we will be building directly from the new Battle.net platform delivered with StarCraft II, while tailoring features and options to specifically suit the Diablo III game and community.

Blizzcon 2009 News.

Blizzcon 2009 was a plethora of news and great .for gamers.

I will be doing a rundown on KISW 99.9 FM on Monday and you can listen live at kisw.com

Here is what we can tell you now. We will have a full write up soon.

World Of Warcraft will have a Revamp of Onyxia to mark 5 Years of the game.

New Playable Races are coming for The World of Warcraft expansion Cataclysm, they are the Goblin and Worgen.

New features will allow Players to purchase their way into a new class. There is also a new Archeologist class reported.
The setting is reorted to be in Azeroth.

Diablo 3
New Class is a Monk. Treasure will be left for individual players to collect so no need to race your team to get items. Inventory control has been enhanced to eliminate trying to fit odd shaped objects into packs.

Single player build should be ready soon, like Starcraft 2, Battlenet needs new updates for multiplay.

Warcraft Movie.

Sam Raimi Confirmed to Direct Warcraft Movie.

Starcraft 2. BattleNet is reason for delay. A real emphasis has been placed on the campaigns so they are not the constant defend/attack that were common in the original. One level we played had a goal to mine a certain amount of materials in a hostile setting.

Blizzard is going to reveal some highly impressive new features which will make Battlenet the leader in social gaming sites.
This will be done with Starcraft, Diablo, and WOW. This allows you to set global friends and will allow friends to contact you in any game or server and allow you to join them, or jump to new games. Say you are playing WOW, a friend can see where you are and message you to join them, or come into a game of Diablo 3 or Starcraft.

Our hands on time with Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 was great and we obtained confirmation that a new MMOPG game is in the works. While details were slim on what the new game will feature, it is said to be a new property unrelated to any previous franchise.

Inglorious Bastards

By Amara

Should we be allowed to laugh at brutality? Is there room for comedy in a film about the Second World War? These are just some of the questions Quentin Tarantino’s latest film “Inglorious Bastards” is sure to bring to mind.

“Inglorious Bastards” is composed of two intertwined stories broken into chapters combining fictitious and factual historic events. The two stories, the tragic tale of orphaned Jewish girl Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent) and that of an oddly funny group of American soldiers, called “the Bastards”, create introspections into the meaning of glory, destruction, and propaganda.

Familiar faces are scattered throughout the film from creator of “the Office” B.J. Norvak to “Austin Powers“ star Mike Myers. The standout performance of Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by the always-evolving Brad Pitt, is both comical and clever and the role of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa, Christoph Waltz, is so evil that, within the scope of the film, he some how manages to overshadow Hitler.

While the film is visually graphic, it is the ideas of violence rather than explicit visuals that litter the film. These violent scenes, from scalping to strangulation, are more dramatic than visually accurate.

The film did drag in parts such, as the dark Cinderella-like bar scene, and there was definitely room for further character development for “the Bastards”, yet the sly structure of the film shatters these minor faults but keeping viewers completely invested in the plotline.

“Inglorious Bastards” mixes classic film elements with techniques hauntingly David Lynch in style. From elements of television westerns to the hauntingly familiar sound of David Bowie, Tarintino has created a new way of looking at the past, all while using a time generally perceived as too awful to mention as a background for laughter.

Twisted, tortured, glorious and not “Inglorious Bastards” delivers as a film bound to become classic Tarantino. Fans will be elated and those who oppose the film’s adult themes will not walk away without at least thinking about the meaning of this one-of-kind feature.

Amara's District 9 Review

District 9
For months the Internet has been ablaze with movie propaganda about “District 9” the anticipated Science Fiction hit of the year. The exciting ad campaign and constant mumbling regarding the film made me wary, it is not unheard for films to lack the luster their advertisements display.

The story takes place twenty years after an alien space ship appears above Johannesburg, South Africa filled with bug-like aliens. These aliens, derogatorily called prawns, are placed in a quarantined slum called District 9. The film begins as a documentary following bumbling cross-species specialist Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) an employee of Multi-National United (MNU) a private company on a mission to evict the aliens to a new location, Distinct 10. Additionally, MNU is the primary company working to integrate the advanced alien weaponry with our own.

As the film progresses Wikus builds a relationship with an alien father and son while his relationship with MNU, the company he had long worked for, deteriorates. Throw in some Nigerian gangsters selling cat food and powerful alien technology and you have the making of science fiction gold.

One of the best elements of the film is the choice of location. The tension regarding South African history and politics is well worked into the film. In particular, the idea of standing up against oppression, even under impossible odds, is well paralleled.

The film provides nonstop entertainment and solidifies its place as a great science fiction film by providing introspection into the human race through interaction with aliens. “District 9” begs the audience to wonder what is more important the essence of humanity or being human.

One of the best science fiction films since “The Fifth Element”, “District 9 “ is both a thought provoking and engrossing film.

The Goods:Live Hard. Sell Hard

By Amara

A group of four expert car salesmen roam the country keeping dealerships in the green. The rag-tag group is led by Don Ready (Jeremy Piven) a charismatic sales genius who lives a full-fledged bachelors life that is until he meets the women of his dreams and the supreme used car salesman challenge.

In “The Goods” Piven is joined by the expected band of jokesters, from Kathryn Hahn to Ving Rhames, as well as select members of “the Office” crew. In fact, Ed Helms plays one of the more interesting roles as the son of the rival dealership’s owner and a member of a small town teen pop group.

The film is filled with outspoken characters that make a wide variety of uncensored adult statements, yet “The Goods” manages not to cross over into the dreaded fart joke territory.

Guest appearances were among the more notable aspects of the film. Among the best was Will Farell as Ready’s dead best friend who returns as an angel complete with backup singers. One of the least impressive appearances was Allen Thick as the almost lineless rival car dealership boss.

While the plot is ridiculous and poorly constructed it does manage to avoid hitting the lowest of the lowbrow comedy circuit. The film floats between “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo” but I would honestly rather see either of those films again over “The Goods”.

The only reason to see this movie is to pick up the few good one-liners bound to be used at the nearest frat house during the upcoming school year. Cheesy and offbeat “The Goods” is exactly what I expected and that wasn’t anything great.

District 9

Director Neill Blomkamp at one point was teamed with Director Peter Jackson to bring a film based on the popular video game series Halo to the screen. Sadly this project never saw the light of day due to gigantic budget cuts and Jackson’s reported reluctance to rework his deal.

Rather than let the talented young director move on to another project without working with him, Jackson put on his Producers hat and teamed with Blomkamp to create the highly entertaining “District 9” which is one of the summers most enjoyable films and a pleasant surprise.

The film is set in Johannesburg and tells of a group of aliens who become stranded on earth when their ship runs out of fuel and becomes disabled.

The film then jumps in and out of a pseudo documentary style as footage from news feeds, security cameras, and cameras are used to set the events and introduce the main character of the film, Wilkus Van De Merwe (Sharlito Copley), who is an employee of the Multi Nations United or MNU company which is in charge of overseeing the aliens and keeping them under control.

While much of this is to keep the public’s fear and disdain for the aliens they derogatorily call “Prawns” at bay, the true motive of the MNU is to unlock the secrets of the alien’s technology specifically their advanced weaponry.

The advanced weaponry cannot be used by humans as only the aliens genetic signatures can enable the weapons to fire, and as such, 20 years after the arrival of the aliens, the MNU is still unable to take advantage of the new technology.

The crux of the films details Wilkus’s promotion to lead a massive relocation of the aliens from their shanty town in District 9 to a more remote locale that will better allow the creatures to remain removed from the disdainful locales.

While the relocation is forceful, the MNU attempts to appease international observers and alien rights advocates by requiring the aliens to consent to the relocation. The fact that this is done at gunpoint is of no consequence to the MNU as the staff and soldiers show utter disdain for the aliens and even resort to such drastic actions as arbitrarily destroying a nest of their eggs in order to keep their population under control.

During the relocation process, Wilkus is clearly enjoying his new position and the status of being the focal point of the documentary. As he attempts to show off some contraband to the camera crew, he is exposed to a substance that starts to alter his DNA.

In less than a day, Wilkus goes from a mild mannered husband and company man to the most wanted man in the world, when it is discovered his DNA is starting to change into alien DNA which allows him to operate the alien weaponry.

Wilkus is exposed to the true nature of the MNU and his father in law, and seeks refuge in District 9 where he allies with an alien in an effort to regain his lost humanity. Along the way, his viewpoints change and he suddenly realizes the need to help the aliens.

In a desperate race against time, Wilkus must face deadly gangs, the MNU troops and other dangers before time runs out.

The film is a clever mix of action, science fiction, and social commentary as the obvious parallels to Apartheid are obvious in the film. The characters are interesting and the film cleverly mixes humor in with the social commentary without hitting you over the head with it.

The film does drag a bit at the ¾ point before gearing up to an action filled and enjoyable finale. “District 9” not only serves as a strong statement from Blomkamp that he is a talent on the rise, and also as a solid redemption for Jackson after the dissatisfaction of “King Kong”, and the failure of “Halo”.

Silverwood Theme Park

Located near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho just outside Spokane, Washington, Silverwood Theme park is a true gem. It is a rarity of a regional theme park that has as much to offer as many of the more well know locales in California and the east coast.

The park was started out simply as a main street attraction that featured a very popular train ride on a historic engine that the owner of the park obtained when he outbid the Disney Corporation. Over the years the park has made the most of the 600+ acres it owns, and has currently developed over 200 acres to include 65 rides and attractions. The park offers something for everyone from the youngest riders to the more seasoned thrill seekers.

When guests first enter, they are presented with the amazing detail and architectural accuracy of a main street that offers everything from a coffee house in a built-to-scale Victorian style home to an old West saloon and theater which offers a glimpse of the past, as well as some great food and souvenirs at prices which are lower than one would expect to find at most theme parks.

The park offers a selection of rides for children and they vary from a carousel and mini coaster to a Ferris wheel and flying rides such as copters and planes.

The Country Carnival section of the park has some really enjoyable attractions for those seeking classics like Tilt a Whirl, Scrambler, Round Up, Paratrooper, and Ferris Wheels.

The bumper boats and Log Flume offer guests a chance to cool off as does the white water raft ride, Thunder Canyon. I have ridden many water rides in my life, but I have never been more soaked than the times I have ridden Thunder Canyon. If river itself was not enough, a well-timed water shot from a quest dropping a quarter into a soak cannon did the job.

During our time in the carnival zone, I enjoyed the Krazy Kars and had a great time chasing others around before slamming into them. The staff is friendly and very accomodating. Souvenir shops offering snacks, hats, sunscreen, shirts and bottled drinks quickly got our hands full, but the conveniently located and reasonably priced lockers near the gaming midway had more than enough room for all of our items with plenty to spare.

For guests wanting big thrills, the park offers some of the best thrill rides anywhere in Coaster Alley which is highlighted by the brand new coaster Aftershock which offers speeds of over 65 mph, a 177 feet drop and a dizzying cobra loop. Fans of wooden coasters will enjoy the out and back classic Timber Terror and the amazing Tremors which has been voted one of the ten best coasters in America, which is amazing considering the ride is just now celebrating its tenth year. The Timber Tremor drops riders over 100 ft at a speed of 60 miles an hour and features four underground tunnels. The classic Corkscrew, which was purchased and shipped from Knotts Berry Farm, and the thrilling Panic Plunge round out this very impressive section of rides.

The park is immaculate and the staff is very friendly and helpful. My wife and mother were amazed at the landscaping and beautiful flowers. The abundance of picnic and seating areas offer a very scenic locale to enjoy a meal or a much needed break from the excitement.

After going through the park, we took the train tour, and our guide, Steamer, offered up great points of interest and history of the park, which included a herd of buffalo and a train robbery where all money raised benefits a local charity. The park features several live shows including an illusionist and an ice skating show. During out lunch on Main Street we enjoyed a performer who impersonated a series of country artists like Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, and Shania Twain.

While this would be plenty for most parks, Silverwood has a water park named Boulder Beach available for guests and admission is included in the ticket price.Upon entering Boulder Beach, my wife commented that she would never look at our local water park the same way again after seeing this spectacular park.

From the numerous slides and two wave pools to the ability to rent a private cabana for the day, the park offers everything you will need to stay cool. One wave pool had large undulating waves, while the other one featured roaring white caps that invited boogie board action. The lazy river ride Elkhorn Creek was one of my favorites as it featured a bar where you could float up to and order an array of tropical drinks.

If thrills are what you have in mind, then rest assured, the parks speed slides will more than meet your expectations. For guests with younger children, Boulder Beach also offers Polliwog Park a splash and play area as well as areas perfect for wading.

Not only is Silverwood Theme Park as must see attraction for guests in the area, it is a very good destination resort for those looking to spend some time in Eastern Washington and Idaho. My only regret was that we did not have more time to enjoy the park, but we had a wonderful time, and look forward to covering the park in future visits.

Discount tickets can be purchased at most Costco stores as well as discounted tickets for children and seniors.

Heavy metal icon to perform before a sold-out crowd at Blizzard Entertainment’s epic gaming festival

IRVINE, Calif. — Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne, will headline the closing concert at this year’s BlizzCon®, which will take place August 21-22 at the Anaheim Convention Center. While tickets to the convention sold out in minutes, a live Pay Per View event will be available via Internet stream and in HD on DIRECTV.

The largest event of its kind, BlizzCon is a celebration of Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft®, Diablo®, and StarCraft® game universes and the global player communities surrounding them. At the closing ceremony on August 22, Ozzy will unleash a thunderous spectacle of rock to put the Lich King in his place and cement his own title as the one true Prince of Darkness.

The Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has sold over 100 million albums worldwide–50 with Black Sabbath and as many as a solo artist–and in 2003 was honored with a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s “Walk of Fame.” This is his second collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment, following a recent TV spot for World of Warcraft®.

DARKEST OF DAYS DEMO CONFIRMED FOR PC

Quit talking about the game and go play it – Yes, futuristic BFG’s are now available to test-drive against Civil War soldiers

Cedar Falls, Iowa – August 10, 2009 – Phantom EFX, a leading developer and publisher of entertainment software, with independent game development studio 8monkey Labs confirmed today the PC demo of Darkest of Days, a free-to-play version of the highly anticipated historically-based first person shooter, will be available on August 11, 2009.

“Custer’s infamous last stand at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history… these are just a few of humanity’s darkest days, and you can dive into both of these in the Darkest of Days demo,” said Aaron Schurman, Chief Executive Officer at Phantom EFX. “This hour-long demo lets players experience unrivaled carnage and to experience what it’s like to use futuristic weapons in period settings and see what happens when you alter history while fighting against hundreds of enemies during some of man’s greatest struggles in History!”

The demo features some serious action, throwing players into the middle of raging battles, while also giving players great hands-on time with a variety of weapons. To get a more in-depth look at the rich weapons loadout, check out the weapons training video at Gametrailers.com.

Key features of Darkest of Days include:

· Brand New Engine: The dedicated team at 8monkey Labs has created an all-new, groundbreaking game engine known as Marmoset. The Marmoset engine not only breaks from the all-too present Unreal engine FPS clones flooding the market, but also allows for some amazing graphical capabilities. You’ll fight through epic battles filled with literally hundreds of NPCs on the screen at the same time, all with an advanced AI without a hint of graphical slowdown and all set against wide-open environments that are lushly detailed and dynamically lighted.

· Compelling Storyline: Darkest of Days is a compelling, action-packed first-person shooter to be sure, but it’s not just mindless run-and-gun, blow ‘em up gameplay. You’ll not only have to think about how to approach certain key battles and situations, but you’ll also have to take care when fighting – certain key people that were never meant to die will be marked with a special blue aura. If you kill them, you’ll face dire consequences…

· Wreak Havoc with Future Weapons in Antiquity: Something nearly every gamer that’s ever played a shooter based in the past has always wanted is the ability to bring a futuristic weapon back through history and kick some major butt. How differently would Custer’s last stand have turned out if the General was equipped with an M-16 assault rifle? You’ll be able to answer questions like this and more in Darkest of Days. While not every battle and situation will allow you to wield weapons from the future, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to unleash futuristic fury on your unsuspecting foes.

· PC powered by PhysX: Only available for the PC on NVIDIA® GeForce® GPUs, NVIDIA® PhysX® technology delivers real-time and hyper-realistic physical gaming effects in Darkest of Days. “Canned” reactions are a thing of the past with PhysX, which brings Darkest of Days to concussive life with blazing explosions and weapons impact effects, reactive debris, realistic water and fog, and lifelike environmental effects including smoke, dirt, dust, and wind.

A Perfect Getaway

By Amara

If “Survivorman” hadn’t given me enough reason to never spend time on a remote beach, “A Perfect Getaway” has sealed my resolve. Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cidney (Milla Jovovich) are newlyweds honeymooning on a remote Hawaiian Island when rumors of a murderous couple begin to circulate. Cliff and Cidney soon find themselves in a triangle of couples, any of which could be the killers.

The film is more akin to a blending of “The Rundown” and “Idle Hands”, than the non-stop creep fest I had expected. Avoiding the exhausted remote Hawaiian island murder movie clichés, “A Perfect Getaway” contains a funny attention-grabbing game of who-done it complete with movie terms worked directly into the plot.

This is a film all about well-crafted characters. All the leads are fun to watch and everyone is bound to have a favorite; from the self proclaimed ‘American Jedi’ Nick (Timothy Olyphant) to the bubbly newlywed Cindy. For me it was the standout performance of Kiele Sanchez as Gina that was the most dramatic and suspenseful.

While I was hesitant to see a film about another a remote island in Hawaii covered in killers, “A Perfect Getaway” blasts past my sense of been there-done-that. The general feel of a mystery novel scattered through the lead characters creates a funny film reminiscent of my R. L. Stine years.

The location is beautiful and haunting, as is to be expected, and the camera is used in a way that truly puts viewers in the film’s action. While “A Perfect Getaway” does drag a little in the beginning staying into the real meat of the film is worth the wait. Additionally viewers will wonder why the film’s characters continue to spend time on an island reported to house a set of murders, but if you can discard these obvious mistakes “A Perfect Getaway” is a refreshing trip.

Julie & Julia

By Amara

‘Julie & Julia’ is an intertwined tale based on the two true stories of cooking legend Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and that of author Julie Powell (Amy Adams). It is a story of non-traditional mentoring and the value of hard work and dedication, covering the process Child went through creating the 1961 classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking alongside the tale of Powell who was made famous when she blogged her way through Child’s book.

The films leads do nothing but deliver. Amy Adams, sporting a spunky new haircut, creates a character that is both soul searching and fun to watch. Meryl Streep amazingly transforms into Child, having perfected the subtleties of her personality so well that I found myself remising back to my single digit years.

The costumes are delightful and manage to seamlessly separate the two women’s tales while uniting them into a bigger story. The use of color and pacing make this a film that displays not only a change in time and lifestyle, but also the uniting human values that are entirely timeless.

A story of relationships and personal growth, combined with moments of laughter and hardship, I found myself in the mood I enjoyed through ‘Chocolat’ and ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’.

The film could have used more food imagery and I felt like the character of Eric Powell (Chris Messina) could have been better developed. But the delightful relationship between Julia and her husband Paul Child, played by the ever-enchanting Stanley Tucci, made this film a wildly entertaining journey.

On top of being a well-told tale, ‘Julie & Julia’ has that je ne sais quoi which make it a truly exceptional piece of film, and I know this because even my action loving husband enjoyed it. Well worth the price of admission ‘Julie & Julia’ is a time traveling felicity that is sure to win your heart, as it has mine.

FRAYED gets picked up by Lionsgate

Local Childhood Pals Break Into Hollywood With Horror Film, FRAYED

For three childhood pals from Kent, Washington, their dream of making a feature film has finally come true. Lionsgate Home Entertainment and Lock It In Entertainment is proud to announce the release of FRAYED, which will be available on DVD August 25th.

This locally produced horror film stars Seattle’s own Aaron Blakely, Tony Doupe’, Alena Dashiell, Tasha Smith, Don Brady and Kellee Bradley. FRAYED was shot in several locations around Puget Sound, including Gig Harbor, Puyallup, Kent and the historic St. Edward Park in Bothell.

FRAYED is a 5-year project that filmmakers Norb Caoili, Rob Portmann and Kurt Svennungsen have been dreaming of since their adolescent movie-making days in Kent, Washington. FRAYED is a slasher with a psychological twist, directed in the style of the classic suspenseful horror movies they grew up watching. FRAYED is frightening and visceral.

One scene near the beginning of the movie may be too difficult to watch for some viewers. They believe it is the tension and suspense created in the film that will affect viewers the most.

FRAYED begins with a familiar horror storyline of an escaped mental patient who goes on a killing rampage, but then escalates into a taut, nerve-wracking thriller that finishes with a mind-blowing twist that will leave audiences shocked and disturbed. A deep, underlying social theme revealed at the very end of the film will also make audiences walk away thinking.

Tony Doupe’, a stage actor and drama teacher, plays the lead role of Sheriff Pat Baker.

Doupe’ has appeared in several movies, including Angelina Jolie’s LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT.

Alena Dashiell (Menefee) stars as Sara in the film and is currently serving with the US Navy in Europe.

FRAYED was well received at film festivals around the country and the world to the tune of many outstanding reviews and was one of only a handful of horror films to screen at the renowned Santa Barbara Film Festival.

It was picked up by Lionsgate after the movie’s premiere at the prestigious L.A. horror festival, “Screamfest.” FRAYED has also been released in Germany and will soon be on the shelves in the U.K., Thailand, Middle East and other countries.

FRAYED will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track.

Bonus material will include 3 featurettes: “Pushing the Edge: The Making of Frayed”, “A View to Kill: Making the Head Bash for Frayed”, “Inside Quantum: The Post-Production of Frayed”, a commentary track and trailers.
