New From Walt Disney Home Entertainment

A series of films designed to delight viewers of all ages awaits with the latest releases from Walt Disney Home Entertainment.

Leading the pack is the immensely popular “High School Musical 3” which follows Zac Ephron, Ashley Tisdale, and Vanessa Hudgens as they embark on the senior year filled with love, dancing, and music. The story is the standard coming of age tale as the kids realize that college will take them along different paths.

Loaded with music and dancing, as well as tons of bonus features, this is a film that will keep fans of the series happy.

Next up is “Space Buddies” which is a delight for younger viewers. The film follows a group of puppies as they embark on a space mission and is filled with all manner of cute and zany situations. Along the way there are plenty of good messages contained about loyalty, teamwork, and more without being preachy. While it may be to light for more mature viewers, the film is ideal for families looking for quality and safe entertainment for the younger members of the family.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua features the voices of George Lopez, Drew Barrymore, and many more in a star studded romp that is classic Disney.

When a spoiled pup named Chloe (Barrymore), becomes lost while on vacation in Mexico, she must rely on a menagerie of animals to get home. Along the way she runs afoul of a ransom plot and must use her new friends to get home and stay ahead of the bad guys.
Loaded with great humor and energy, this is one not to miss.

WatchMen The Complete Motion Comic

In anticipation of the pending release of “Watchmen”, Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has released “Watchmen, The Complete Motion Comic”. The twelve Episode animated feature brings the graphic novel to life page by page.

The story tells of the murder of the hero known as The Comedian and the arrange of heroes whose lives were affected by and altered by the events leading up to and following his death.
In an intense Film Noir style, the gritty and intense story delves into an alternate 1985 where Nixon is President, the U.S. won Vietnam thanks to Dr. Manhattan, and the world is poised on the verge of nuclear disaster.

In a race against time, the remaining heroes must get to the bottom of whom is behind the death of the Comedian and save the world.

I had never had a chance to read the graphic novel and I was captivated by this DVD as it not only told a very entertaining and gripping story, but it provided me with the source material I need to fully appreciate the film when I review it next week.

The film also contains Movie Money for up to $7.50 off a ticket to “Watchmen” as well as previews of upcoming films.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

f2After a nearly four year wait, two expansion packs, a change of publishers, and a title change, the follow up to our 2005 Game of the Year award winner F.E.A.R. is finally here. After successfully obtaining the rights to the name F.E.A.R., the new sequel is called F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin instead of the planned Project Origin. Regardless of what it is called, developer Monolith Productions and Publisher Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment have unleashed one of the best 3D shooters and action games ever made.

These time out players are put in the role of Sgt Michael Becket as you and your team are dispatched to obtain Aristide, an executive with Armacham Technology Corporation. Starting roughly thirty minutes before the climatic events that concluded the first team, you race through various locales doing battle with private security and fearsome Armacham Black Op soldiers as well as the deadly Replica soldiers.

Following a spectacular visual sequence, the player wakes up and finds that he has been altered and now has superior reflexes and speed which like in the original allows players to enter a bullet time mode and move much faster than your enemies and their gunfire. This as before, results not only in a wide range of possible tactics but some truly amazing combat as gunfire whizzes past you in slow motion as do clouds of fire, debris, and blood.

With his new abilities, Becket has drawn the attention of Alma who appears throughout the game and when she is knock off and brutally dispatching all those in her path, and thinning the ranks of Becket’s support team, she is grappling with Beckett himself. In one of the games new combat features, players can grapple with Alma and other enemies by clicking the mouse buttons. Successfully clicking the buttons fast enough allows players to land a blow and gain a tactical advantage. If a player is to slow, they often do not get the chance to recover from their mistake.

It is learned that Alma is attempting to absorb Becket, and with the surviving members of his team, he must battle against legions of enemies and get to a top secret facility in order to amplify his new powers. It is hoped that once this is done, Becket will have a chance to face and defeat Alma and that only he alone can end the destruction that has been unleashed.

This of course is easier said than done as a never ending legion of foes with some of the best A.I. and tactics you will ever face are waiting for you. The great ability that enemies displayed in the first game to take cover and avoid fire has been enhanced as enemies will now set traps, move objects as they advance to provide rolling cover, leap, roll, and jump to avoid incoming fire.

In a nice twist, players can now use objects to provide cover such as knocking over a table or desk.
One of my favorite tactics was to pull over an object and then place a proximity grenade shortly before activating my bullet time and moving away at a high rate of speed. Once normal speed resumed, enemies that made the mistake of advancing on my position often got an unexpected surprise.

The game also has explosive barrels and clever items such as power boxes and fire extinguishers which can be used with explosive and devastating results. The joy of the game is being able to find ways to make your environment work for you by using electrical current and other factors to set traps and help even the odds when faced against superior numbers.

The weaponry in the game is first rate as players are able to take up to four weapons with them. There were pistols, machine guns, shotguns, and a nice addition to the nail gun known as the “Hammerhead” as well as a sniper rifle and missile launcher. New weapons included a plasma weapon and a great laser that allowed you to slice up your enemies and a napalm weapon. There are also several grenade types such as proximity, frag, incendiary, and a great one that is essentials and E.M.P. blast that disables tech based enemies.

As good as those weapons were they paled in comparison to the Mech stages of the game where I was able to ride an assault Mech and cut down enemies with chain guns and rocket fire. There are also segments of the game where players can use the mounted gun on their A.P.C. unit in order to mow down advancing enemy forces.

The enemies are a lot more than your usual 3D shooter heavies as aside from the clever tactics they can deploy, they are armed to the teeth and often take a barrage of hits to bring down. There are also some supernatural and stealth based enemies to content with who delight in sneak attacks in dark areas.

Players also have the ability to melee and use the unarmed combat moves that were established in the first game as well.

The level designs were good and the impressive graphic engine really allowed the detail level of maps such as a lab, hospital, subway, factory, school, apartment complexes, and much more.
The voice acting and music in the game are a cut above the standard fare and while the game was not as intense from a scare point as the original, the action and intensity of this game were beyond compare.

F.E.A.R. 2 also offers great multiplay as I enjoyed Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and the other online modes. I hope to see new maps in the near future and would love to be able to bring the mech battles into the game at some point.

The game allows players to setup controls in the way they chose, but I was stunned to see that game did not offer a save system and instead opted for a check point save system. This was a big disappointment to me as like many gamers, I do not enjoy having to replay portions of a level should I be killed.

I did experience a couple of technical hiccups such as some lag when using bullet time in one instance and a couple of delays when new areas were accessed. Despite this, using my Razer Lachesis and Lycosa I was able to deftly move about the games with ease and I love using the Razer Destructor gaming pad as it truly added to my online and solo play experience with greater mouse tracking.
All in all the game was highly addictive and enjoyable and is an early leader for our game of the year award. I just hope the wait until the next chapter is not as long as F.E.A.R. 2 is a true classic that delivers the goods gamers want and deserve.

Max Payne DVD Review

mpAgainst the gritty, snow covered, and crime ridden streets of New York, one man is waging a battle for redemption and revenge. The man in Detective Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg), and following the murder of his wife and infant son, Payne has seen his life and career spin down an ever deepening black hole to the point where he is relegated to a basement office working on cold cases.
Max has become a creature of the night, and spends his off hours patrolling the grimy sections of the city looking for clues about the death of his wife and taking on all manner of the cities criminal elements to get to the truth which has so long eluded him.

While attempting to gain information from a former snitch, Max is introduced to the Natasha Sax (Olga Kurylenko), and her sister Mona (Mila Kunis). The fact that Mona is suspicious of Max from the start is of little concern to Natasha who follows Max back to his apartment and attempts to seduce him. Max quickly spurns her advances which causes Natasha to leave his apartment angry and unbeknownst to Max, steals his wallet in the process. Shortly after leaving Max’s apartment, Natasha is brutally murdered and when Max’s wallet is found at the scene, he becomes the lead suspect in the murder.
Soon after learning from his former partner that Natasha’s dead may be linked to the death of Max’s wife, Max becomes the subject of a city wide manhunt when his partner turns up dead which is attributed to Max going over the edge.

In a race against time, Max must get to the bottom of the deaths as well as solve his family’s murder and clear his good name. This will not be easy as Max must face the resources of a gigantic corporation as well as a crazed drug lord, and his colleagues on the police force.

Based on the popular video games series from Remedy Entertainment and 3D Realms, Max Payne takes some of the games more prominent characters and themes and creates a new storyline. The bullet time ability that Max had in the game has been omitted and replaced with a few gun battles that are shot at times in slow motion, such as a well staged battle in an office building.

While the storyline and character development may be lacking, the film does a decent job of capturing the look and tone of the games, and Wahlberg is solid as the tormented lead character.

Backed by a solid supporting cast which includes Beau Bridges, Chris O’Donnell, and Ludacris, “Max Payne” is an enjoyable if flawed movie experience that makes up for its shortcomings with solid visuals and some great gun battles that come late in the film.

The picture and sound quality of the movie are very crisp and if you have the chance to enjoy the film in surround sound and HDTV I would highly suggest it.

The bonus features are very good and there is a great graphic book feature that delves more into the character of Max Payne’s wife and the events leading up to her murder.

Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder

gy The fourth (and lets hope not final) of the planned straight to DVD Futurama movies, “Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder” has arrived and continues the winning formula of the television series and three previous films as well as ties things up nicely should this be the final outing for the Planet Express crew.

The film opens with a new take on the traditional opening and we are treated to the scenic Mars Vegas complete with futuristic interpretations of the class Las Vegas hotels. As the film opens, Mars Vegas is being destroyed to make way for a new and even better Mars Vegas. This does not sit well with Amy (Lauren Tom) as her father is the one behind all of this, and when she learns that he plans to eliminate portions of a solar system to make the universes biggest miniature golf course, she decides to join a militant feminist group with Leela (Katey Sagal).

As this is happening Fry (Billy West), learns that he has the power to read minds and is recruited by a secret organization who inform him of a great evil that is loose in the galaxy and that he will be the key to preserving the universe.

Bender (John Di Maggio), as usual is happy to drink and grift his way through life, that is until a affair with a local crime figures wife provides him with some danger and distraction.

When a planned protest goes horribly wrong, Leela and Amy end up as fugitives and are doggedly pursued by Captain Zapp Brannigan as they race against the clock to save the creatures of the solar system from Leo Wong’s planned construction.

The film is as usual, loaded with laughs and plenty of pop culture gags. Snoop Dogg and Penn Jilette make cameo appearances as do many of the characters from the series.

With sharp picture and sound, this is a very enjoyable new adventure for fans and should add demand for future adventures in the series and provide great viewing enjoyment.

There are loads of extras which include deleted scenes, commentaries, as well as deleted scenes.

Friday The 13th

f13

In the 1980’s the so- called slasher film genre was in full swing. When Michael Myers and the “Halloween” franchise became the highest grossing independent film in cinema history, the studios scrambled to get in on the booming genre and unleashed a flood of psycho killers on the viewing public, for the better part of a decade and a half.

Along with the aforementioned Michael Myers, and the later Freddy Krueger from the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, Jason Voorhees of the “Friday The 13Th” series has become a cultural landmark. He has appeared in over ten movies (eleven if you count “Freddy Vs. Jason”) and unleashed havoc on countless oversexed and loaded teens, as well as those unfortunate enough to cross his path.
While the series, to many fans, become stale and largely self mocking with the Jason-in-space themed “Jason X”, the character rebounded nicely with “Freddy Vs. Jason” and had many fans clamoring for a second match up between the two iconic bad guys.

Eventually the powers-that-be decided to go the remake route, which had proven successful with “Halloween” and “My Bloody Valentine”, and have crafted a new “Friday the 13th” which they hope will re-energize the series.

The film opens with a modern re-telling of what was part of the finale of the original film, and hits the ground running with an impressive opening sequence that has Jason menacing a group of teens camping in the woods. The intense first twenty minutes of the film had the audience at the test screening gasping and cheering as the events set the stage for the body of the film, which revolves around another group of young adults taking a trip into the woods for a scenic getaway.

As the group stops for supplies, they encounter a young man who is looking for his sister who vanished in the area six weeks earlier. Despite little luck in his search, and the insistence by the local police that his sister is not anywhere in the area, he remains undaunted and continues his search.
At the same time, the group of young adults embarks on a frenzy of sex, drinking, drugs, and carefree living in the woods unaware that they are about to gain the attention of Camp Crystal Lake’s most infamous former camper.

As the film unfolds, Jason soon unleashes his customary brutality on the group as well as any townies that come across him, and the film deftly mixes some humor with classic horror mayhem. In the time honored formula, a group of survivors soon finds themselves under siege by Jason and must find a way to survive Jason’s wrath.

While the film lacks much in the way of plot and is loaded with a cast of largely unknowns, the film is a refreshing update to the series, knowing what the fans have come to expect and providing plenty of gore and scares. Since the cast exists to be little more than fodder for Jason, there is little effort devoted to fleshing them out as characters other than to provide excuses for most of the ladies in the film to shed their clothes, and a few of the male cast to establish themselves as comic relief, or the jerk who is destined for something special.

Director Marcus Nispel who has a solid pedigree with the recent “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, viral videos of Resident Evil 5, as well as the pending “Alice.” He clearly knows his subject matter and working with Producer Michael Bay and a script from Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (the duo behind “Freddy vs. Jason”), produced a solid by the numbers horror film.

Fans of the series will note clever references to the past films such as Jason’s original mask and will find themselves yelling at the screen over the constant stupidity of the victims as well as the inventive way Jason dispatches his victims. I found myself enjoying the updated Jason because while the movie is faithful to the character, it revitalized him to show a more cunning predator who is not above using traps, bait, and plotting to achieve his means. There was a plot thread in the film that did not really get developed as much as I had hoped, but in the end, the film delivered the goods and sets the stage well for future outings of the machete-wielding Jason.

He's Just Not That Into You

By Gen Mc Bride

Okay. Try to follow me here.

Meet Gigi, a bright-eyed 20-something who’s navigating her way through the singles scene. Gigi has a date with Conor, a young, up and comer who buys her two drinks and kisses her on the cheek at the end of the date and says he’ll call her. And for some reason, Gigi believes him and thinks he may be “the one.”

So what does a single woman do when she’s found “the one?” Apparently women become obsessive-compulsive creatures who wait by the phone and check their voicemail repeatedly, watch their cell phone like a hawk and hang up on their mothers to keep the line open. She leans on her friends Beth and Janine for moral support when the phone call fails to come through. No call from Conor doesn’t stop Gigi from moving on to stalking Conor’s favorite watering hole. Enter Alex, the owner/bartender of said watering hole who becomes Gigi’s cynical sage, the all-knowing mentor who demystifies the puzzle of the uninterested male.

So why is Conor uninterested in Gigi? Because he still has a thing for Anna, his friend with benefits, although the benefits have been withheld for some time. But Anna’s just met Ben, a married man. The attraction between Anna & Ben is instantly mutual. Yet Ben fights the attraction, all the while trying not to lament his marriage to Janine. (Still following me?) Ben leans on his friend Neil for moral support. Neil’s single, but in his mind he’s as good as married to his longtime girlfriend, Beth, who is trying very hard to understand why they aren’t yet married. Meanwhile, Anna ponders the idea of going after a married man, using her friend Mary as her sounding board even though Mary isn’t exactly an expert on dating since her personal advisors are her gay coworkers.

“He’s Just Not That Into You” is mishmash of funny anecdotes, disturbing stereotypes, acerbic wisdom and heartbreaking circumstances. With a strong, attractive cast and a witty script based on the book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, HJNTIY is an entertaining foray into the minds of 20 & 30-somethings who are trying to make sense of the right and wrong relationships.

In this ensemble, you have Ginnifer Goodwin and Kevin Connolly who play Gigi and Conor with an earnestness, that borders on manic (for Gigi) and with a touch of cute (for Conor). The sexy Anna is played handily by Scarlett Johannson while Bradley Cooper charms as Ben. Jennifer Connelly is the neurotic and suspicious Janine to the seemingly unconcerned Beth, played by Jennifer Anniston. (How did they keep these names straight on set?) Ben Affleck’s lowkey performance makes his Neil a sympathetic character, while Drew Barrymore, for the little screen time she had, was, in turns, endearingly bewildered and resigned. Justin Long makes the most of his screen time infusing Alex with wisdom and harsh compassion to make it one of his more unique portrayals to date.

Maybe because it’s hard to imagine anyone not being that into this good-looking ensemble, the movie had its biggest laughs from the real-people anecdotes interspersed throughout the film. Single moviegoers may find the unflattering representations hit too close to home, while some married viewers may see the same cracks in their mirrors. Still, HJNTIY is an entertaining diversion in which both genders will find something that will make them wince, chuckle or ponder.

PUSH

Inside a secure facility a woman named Kira (Camilla Belle), is about to be injected with an experimental drug that will soon set a chain of events into motion that will turn Hong Kong into a battleground. The facility is operated by the ultra secret agency known as “The Division” who are tasked with locating, controlling, training, and at times, eliminating those who possess psychic abilities as they endeavor to create an army of highly trained specialists with psychic abilities.

In the new action film “Push”, Chris Evans stars as Nick Grant, a man who has tried to keep a low profile after seeing his father murdered by Division ten years earlier. Nick has taken refuge in Hong Kong in an effort to stay away from Division as he has no desire to get involved with their or for that matter, anyone’s agenda or cause.

Nick has become indebted to several local thugs due to his gambling, and his inability to fully use his psychic ability to move objects with his mind and when Division arrives looking for a runaway, Nick is eager to get out of town before he gets dragged into the conflict.

Shortly after the Division agents leave his home, Nick is visited by a young girl named Cassie (Dakota Fanning), who informs him that they need to work with one another to earn 6 million dollars and save themselves. While Nick is hesitant, he remembers that is late father told him a young girl would one day give him a flower and when she comes, he must do as she says.

Before long, Nick and Cassie are attacked by a local gang who like Cassie and Nick are able to use psychic abilities. After a narrow escape, Nick learns that Cassie is able to see the future and she has learned that the woman that Division is seeking is vital as she has stolen a valuable drug that they need to enhance the psychic abilities of those they inject. They fact that the drug has proven fatal to everyone injected aside from Kira and would command a huge price has Division, Nick, Cassie, and the local gang scrambling to locate Kira. Cassie has also informed Nick that she sees both Nick and her dying as a result of their involvement and must find a way to change their fates.

As if matters were not complicated enough, leading the Division search is Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou), the same man behind the death of Nick’s father. Carver will stop at nothing to retrieve Kira and the missing drug, and he and his dangerous minions do not care how many people die along the way.

“Push” is an interesting film that puts the focus on the characters rather than FX. While there is action in the film, it does not dominate the film. The neon and crowded streets of Hong Kong serve as a perfect backdrop to the film and the strong work by Evans and Fanning make them a winning combination as does the interesting premise of the film. While the film does lose some of its pacing along the way as it seems unsure if it wants to be an all out action flick, or a drama, the film rebounds and provides a conclusion which is an obvious lead for a sequel.

While some people have commented to me that the movies seems like a rip off of Heroes, I found it to be fresher and more entertaining than the show, which in my opinion has be coasting since the spectacular first 12 episodes.

In the end, “Push” has just enough action and originality to combine with the charismatic and interesting cast to make an enjoyable movie experience.

The Tenth Cirlce

The movie version of the best selling book The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult has come to DVD courtesy of Sony Home Entertainment. The film stars Kelly Preston and Ron Eldard as Laura and Daniel Stone a successful husband and wife who have their entire world turned upside down when their 15-year old daughter claims that she was raped at a party.

Their ideal life is turned upside down when the investigation takes a surprise twists which results in a tense and suspense filled thriller that explores just how far parents will go for their children.
Directed by Peter Markle, the film is very entertaining and is loaded with strong and powerful performances which combine very a solid film.

Killzone 2

kz2Sony and Guerilla games have combined to produce the first must have game for 2009. Killzone 2 is a non-stop thrill ride that is easily the best first person shooter developed for the Playstation 3 console. The game follows up the events of the first game as well as the popular Kilzone: Liberation for the PSP.

Killzone 2 takes place on the Helghast home planet of Helghan. In response to an attack on a colony of the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance or ISA, a large group of soldiers has been dispatched in an effort to capture the Helghast Emperor and bring an end to the conflict.

Players are put in the role of Sergeant Tomas Sevchenko or “Sev” He has unit are dispatched behind enemy lines in an effort to pave the way for the main attack force. No sooner do you land when players realize that the hostile enemy is not the only thing facing them, as the planet has a very harsh and severe ecosystem that will hamper their war efforts.

Players work with other A.I. controlled soldiers to achieve strategic objections such as opening flood gates, knocking out rocket batteries and incoming armor divisions all the while running and gunning against the battle hardened enemy soldiers, who clad in their dark armor and Nazi Stormtrooper like helmets and glowing red eyes make for an intimidating foe.

Thankfully players will have a wide assortment of weapons to aid in their battle ranging from assault rifles, pistols, rocket launchers, grenades and fixed weapons. I was very grateful to liberate an enemy machine gun nest as being able to turn their own weapons on and advancing legion as well as cut a building to shreds around entrenched snipers really gave me a sense of satisfaction.

Players carry two weapons at a time, but are able to pick up and exchange their weapons at several points during the game by finding a weapons supply area or taking the weapon from a fallen enemy. Players do have a default pistol that they are unable to swap for and do have the ability to melle with enemy players should they become low on ammunition.

There are also some well placed strategic opportunities for players such as the one time I found myself facing a horde of enemy units with only my pistol. Thanks to a well placed shot at an abandoned fuel canister, I was able to dispatch my enemies and reload from the weapons they dropped.

The levels of the game are combined with animated sequences that advance the storyline and setup future missions. There is also a ranking system that provides in mission challenges and awards ribbons at the completion of levels.

Another great feature of the game is the ability to operate vehicles and I really enjoyed the first time I was able to command a tank and turn the big guns lose on enemy infantry and armor. The outdoor missions worked better for me than the indoor ones as even in HD, I found that some of the interiors were a bit to dark for my taste.

I did most of my review on a Test Sample of the game that was sent to me by Sony. I did find some lag and jumpiness in the controls which I attributed to the build I was playing, but I did remember that the original Killzone had such issues so I hope this will be resolved in the final build.

The gameplay was solid and I enjoyed the way that I had to use my Dualshock 3 control at times to manipulate objects, set charges and so on by holding down buttons and tilting and turning the control.
The enemy A.I. was solid but not as good as I had hoped for as some of my opponents did seek cover and attempt to use the lean and peek cover system that I was able to deploy, but many simply charged at me and made themselves easy targets.

As the game went along I found myself enjoying the action, but I was never fully drawn into the story as I have been with some First Person Shooters such as F.E.A.R. and the Half Life series. This is not to say that the game has a bad story, but rather that there was nothing really fresh or compelling. It was the standard storyline of a player taking on an army of bad guys with few twists and turns to flesh out the experience. That being said, for action lovers, Killzone 2 delivered the goods as I was never at a loss for action and the designers focused on giving players the most carnage and mayhem possible.

The game does feature a checkpoint save system which has never been a favorite of mine, as I hate having to repeat portions of a level should you die. I tend to prefer to go in with guns blazing and had to adjust my style to use more stealth than I used to, and use the sites to take down enemies from afar rather than up close.

The graphics in the game are solid, aside from the dark interiors I mentioned earlier, and the ability to shoot of the helmet of your enemy was a real thrill. The voice acting in the game is solid and many players will also enjoy the boss battles that arise in the game.

The game offers Warzone which is a class based multiplay system that offers six classes for players to select from as well as a squad based function. Currently there are no plans to offer co-op play in the game which I hope will change, as being able to play the game with friends and connect via a Blu Tooth would truly make this game standout.

In the end, despite some blemishes and shortcomings, Killzone 2 is an action lovers dream and is a must have for any Playstation 3 owner, and is destined to become a classic.
